Beaufort Marine Research Awards

Beaufort launch

The Beaufort Marine Research Awards were launched in early 2007.  The awards were a proactive way of significantly developing overall Irish research capacity with a view to positioning Ireland’s marine sector within a global knowledge-based economy.  The awards targeted research leadership of international standing by making funding available for Principal Investigators and a number of researchers with seven year contracts.

Eligibility

The awards were open to research groups located in Institutions in Ireland (32 counties) with the capacity to conduct innovative research and provide research training.  While typically located in Higher Education Institutions, research groups/consortia located in other organisations actively collaborating with Higher Education Institutes, were also considered.  Applications were sought from research groups wishing to develop their research capacity in the following five priority areas of marine research as identified under the Sea Change Strategy:

  • Ecosystems Approach to Fisheries Management
  • Marine Biodiscovery
  • Marine Sensors and Communications
  • Fish Population Genetics
  • Marine Economic & Social Research

Results

In September 2007, the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources and the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine  announced the 10 Research Groups/Centres that were successful in their bid for the Awards, following evaluation by international experts.  The awards amount to some €20 million of carefully targeted funding that will create 140 new positions for researchers and students located in five Institutions on the Island of Ireland working in five scientific consortia.
