Chaetoceros spp , predominantly a non toxic species, has been observed at high levels which may pose a gill irritation treat, in the following areas : Gweedore (DL-GE-CN 313,838 cells/lt) - Report 14-20b Rev1 .

Phaeocystis species (please see note at page end) have been observed in Killary Inner (GY-KI-KI 30,744 cells/lt) - Report 14-20c Rev1 . Clew Bay (MO-CO-CM 11,805,750 cells/lt) -Report 14-20g .

Prorocentrum minimum   A bloom of this organism can cause water to turn brown-red in colour. These species can cause problems to finfish and other marine organisms. This species has been observed in Mulroy (Glinsk 40 cells/lt)   - Report 14-20d .Inver Bay (Ocean farm 120cells/lt) - Report 14-20h .

Harmful and Nuisance species notes

Phaeocystis spp . can take the form of individual small motile cells or form large gelatanous colonies comprising of many hundred of cells bound together. This species is typical for spring time of year and can form significant blooms under suitable conditions .These blooms when formed are characterised by white foam on the surf line of the shore .This species itself, at high levels, can be a harmful species to both Finfish and shellfish, both a larvae and adult life stages.

Chaetoceros spp. at high levels may cause gill irritation in finfish and/or have an impact on the water quatily The impact of this genus/group is directly related to the specific species involved and the cell levels.

Akashiwo sanguinea is a species which has the capacity to bloom and cause water discoloration.Such blooms have been associated with fish and invertebrate kills due to oxygen depletion.

Raphidophytes - Specific members (ie: Heterosigma akashiwo) of this 'naked' group can pose serious threats to finfish aquaculture.Physical clogging of fish gills by mucus excretion.

Prorocentrum minimum /balticum is an organism that can cause water to turn brown-red in colour. These species can cause problems to finfish and other marine organisms.

Heterocapsa spp . group - Shellfish mortality has been associated with blooms of these organisms.

Karenia mikimotoi - this species has been implicated in finfish and other marine organism mortalities.
