The Marine Institute, on behalf of the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources, was the Implementing Body for Measure 8 (Marine Research) of the Operational Programme for Fisheries (1994-1999).

The Marine Research Measure provided funding for actions under the following seven sub-measures:

8.1 provision of an enhanced research vessel capability;
8.2 provision of marine laboratory infrastructure at key centres of national
marine research expertise;
8.3 new project-based research into the management and development of
sea and inland fisheries and aquaculture;
8.4 new project-based R&D into added-value food projects in the marine,
especially fish processing sector;
8.5 the undertaking of a national survey of marine resources (living and non-living);
8.6 the undertaking of project-based R&D into a range of
marine technology products and services;
8.7 evaluation of the STRIDE Operational Programme (1991-1994).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

All funds for these sub-measures were committed by the end of 1999.

Projects approved under the Marine Research Measure were 75% funded from the European Union's European Regional Development Fund and received 25% funding from the Irish Exchequer.

Two Public Calls for Proposals were issued by the Marine Institute in March 1995 and again in February 1997 (sub-measures 8.3-8.6). A total of fifty-one research projects were supported between 1995 and 1997.

The Marine Institute, established under the Marine Institute Act 1991, is the national agency with responsibility 'to undertake, to co-ordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to research and development that, in the opinion of the Institute, will promote economic development and create employment and protect the marine environment'.
