The Marine Institute carries out a wide range of surveys, from fisheries surveys which play a key role in the management and understanding of fish stocks, to the Irish National Seabed Survey project, mapping the Irish seafloor to better understand the marine resource.

Some of the surveys we are involved in are:
Fisheries Surveys
Find out about surveys such as Nephrops, Groundfish, Acoustic, Tagging, Egg and Larval and Deep Water surveys on the Fisheries Surveys Page.
Oceanographic Surveys
The oceanographic team routinely monitors changes in sea temperatures and currents to assess the likely effects of global climate change in Irish waters.
Seabed Mapping Surveys at the Marine Institute

Join a Foreign Research Vessel Survey in Irish Waters
In any one year, up to 50 foreign marine research programmes take place in Irish Waters. If you are an Irish scientist and would like to join a foreign research vessel in Irish Waters, you can apply for our Foreign Research Vessel Observer Scheme.
Information for Foreign Research Vessels in Irish Waters
All foreign research vessels planning to carry out scientific research in Irish Waters need to apply for consent by contacting Research Vessel Operations, Marine Institute. These waters include the Territorial Sea, the 200-mile Exclusion Fishery Zone and the Continental Shelf. Application guidelines are available on the Foreign Vessels Survey page.
