Welcome to our first Newsletter of the year 2010 which, in the words of Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Mr. Tony Killeen T.D. who visited the national research vessel R.V. Celtic Explorer in Galway docks last week, opens a new 'Decade of Discovery' for Irish Marine Science.
We look forward to reporting on all the stories that come from both the Marine Institute and the wider Irish marine science community over this new and exciting decade and to the sustainable development of Ireland's 220 million acre underwater resource.
Also, a reminder that Irish marine researchers can now apply for fully funded ship time in 2011 on a range of 18 ocean going and inshore research vessels under a new project called EUROFLEETS which has been launched and funded by the European Union (see story "Great Opportunity for Irish Marine Researchers" in this Newsletter).
Expressions of interest need to be received by the 15th January 2010, with the call for full proposals opening on 1st March 2010.
Finally, calling all primary school teachers - don't forget to check out our new educational resources featuring the "Real Map of Ireland" for primary schools on
