 The "Real Map of Ireland"

Ireland has an underwater territory, granted by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of approximately 220 million acres, ten times the size of the land.

This "Real Map of Ireland", produced from information obtained during the Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) between the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute, shows the extent and variety of Ireland's greatest natural resource - the ocean.

Dr Paul Connolly, Director of the Marine Institute’s Fisheries Science Services team, explains why and how this important publication is put together and comments on the new direction scientific advice will take in the coming years.
