The Explorers Activity Book (PDF 1.1MB) contains a number of fun exercises, colouring pages and activities.    It includes information about Ireland’s 220 million acre marine resource, facts about the sea and the work of the Marine Institute. The book is by Cushla Dromgool-Regan and the illustrations were drawn by Don Conroy.

CAPTAIN COCKLE AND THE ROCK POOL COLOURING BOOK  

Captain Cockle and the Rock Pool Colouring Book (PDF 1727 KB) contains a number of colouring pages illustrating the adventures of Captain Cockle meeting many “giant” seashore creatures. Captain Cockle and the Rock Pool is by John Joyce.

SECRETS OF IRELANDS SEAS

The teachers’ resource and lesson plans from  The Secrets of Ireland’s Seas (PDF, 2MB) was compiled for the An Post’s 2007 Educational Award Scheme with the assistance of the Marine Institute.  The full colour booklet demonstrates the excitement of the new era Ireland is entering in terms of sustainable marine development and the sheer fun of being involved in the exploration of Ireland’s seas.

EXPLORER – A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING  

The Marine Institute DVD Explorer - A Deeper Understanding, features a fly-on-the-wall documentary on a deepwater mission aboard the research vessel RV Celtic Explorer.   This exciting documentary can be viewed directly from You Tube or purchased through our e-store.

Be a Marine Scientist for a Day - Children's Workshop

Galway Atlantaquaria is home to one of the country’s largest displays of marine and fresh water life. Explorers Tanks and School Visits

The "Explorers" Education Programme brings the excitement of the sea into the classroom.   The programme is co-ordinated by the Marine Institute through Galway Atlantaquaria and supported by the Forfas Discover Primary Science Programme as well as by local interests in education and outreach in the Galway area.

In the Galway region the Explorers Programme is underway with school visits to over twenty schools from afar a field as Letterfrack, Galway city, Oranmore and Clarinbridge. The programme has also been extended to a number of schools in County Mayo and County Clare.  It is conducted by Dr. Noirin Burke, the Explorers Education Officer based at Galway Atlantaquaria, who visits the schools on a regular basis.

TEACHER SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME

As an important element of the Explorers Programme, the Marine Institute has designed a five-day in-service course for National School teachers which is run in collaboration with Galway Education Centre.  The course introduces marine themes in developing both skills and content and includes field trips to the sea-shore, practical classroom sessions on how to bring the sea to the classroom and a number of cross curricular activities involving arts and games.

MARINE POLLUTION PATHWAYS

Marine Pollution Pathways is an interactive workshop delivered to primary school classes by the Ryan Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy Research in Galway.  In this workshop, students will be introduced to the concepts of chemical and biological controls on marine pollution and the fate of marine contaminants, through a powerpoint presentation and supporting activities and demonstrations.  A favourite game in this workshop is "How long does it stay in the ocean?" - a game designed to help children understand the concept of biodegradation, and to appreciate how long marine litter can remain in the environment.
