Each year Galway Atlantaquaria organises a beach clean as part of the Marine Conservation Society’s Beach Watch programme and this year we are looking to have the biggest clean yet with 7 beaches from Rinville to Barna taking part.
According to the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS), beach litter is more than just an eyesore for thousands of beach visitors across the country; it is a global issue that represents a major threat to many vulnerable marine species. It is estimated that, globally, over a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die every year from entanglement, or ingestion of plastics.
Sharon Carroll from Galway City Council says, “Local people recognise the wonderful resource we have on our doorstep and this shows in the commitment with the growing number of volunteers each year. We’re delighted that some hotels, companies and community groups as well as individuals have shown an interest this year, showing that people do really care about their environment”
