The Marine Institute is hosting an international seaweed research symposium on 22nd January 2009. The symposium will give insights to international seaweed research involving bioactive discovery, give Irish researchers an opportunity to share their experience and research with colleagues in other institutions and with the seaweed industry, and give a briefing on the recently launched national industry-led research initiative “Bioactive Compounds from Seaweed” by Enterprise Ireland.
Irish research groups and individual researchers with a background in seaweed, or sciences that support the identification, analysis, extraction and processing of bioactive and other compounds from natural products, will make short presentations and display posters which outline their experience and current research.
International seaweed researchers will also present on key topics of relevance to the research initiative:
"Challenges in the optimised production of bioactives from kelp" by Dr. Philippe Potin (PDF, 126KB), Station Biologique de Roscoff, France
“Challenges and options in the extraction of bioactive compounds from macro-algae” by Dr. Elena Ibañez (PDF, 68KB), IFI-CSIC, Spain
"Seaweed research – the needs of international industry" by Dr. Alan Critchley (PDF, 96KB), Acadian Seaplants Ltd., Canada
The symposium is open to all researchers based in Ireland working on seaweed, marine bioprospecting, natural products chemistry, biochemistry, process engineering and in related areas; to the seaweed industry and national agencies; for whom attendance at the symposium is free. Overseas delegates will be charged a fee of €150.
