The Marine Institute in conjunction with Enterprise Ireland, BIM, Teagasc and the Department of Agriculture, is developing a national research programme in Marine Functional Foods and Ingredients. Sea Change - A Marine Knowledge, Research and Innovation Strategy for Ireland 2007 to 2013 identified the need for such a Programme. The government’s Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation identified a lead role for the Marine Institute in defining the Programme.
The Marine Institute hosted Ireland’s first Marine Functional Foods Workshop on 26th January, 2007 at its headquarters in Oranmore, Co Galway. The workshop was addressed by international experts in marine origin functional foods research. A key challenge of the Workshop was to define and prioritise research themes that could form the basis of a series of research calls to be funded under the next National Development Plan 2007 to 2013. This document outlines those priorities.
The marine functional food workshop included five concurrent breakout sessions, each session considering the content of two research themes as outlined in the Marine Functional Foods Briefing Document.
