The intent of the Nor-Fishing Technology Conference 2008 is to create a forum for presentations and discussions versus both the main challenges confronting the fishing industry in the years to come and possible means to meet these challenges.
Among the challenges is overcapacity which, according to FAO, is among the core problems in the fisheries industry of today. In international fisheries management, there is a general consensus that overcapacity leads to an increased pressure on the fish stocks and a reduced economic profit. Further, the energy consume in combination with increasing energy prices and environmental taxes, cause emission of climate gasses and particles on top of serious economic problems. The optimum utilization of fish as raw material is another aspect. Only the target catch should be taken on board and processed and brought to the market in the best possible way. Statistics show also that the fisher profession is still one of the most dangerous in Norway as well as in many other countries.
It seems evident that there are several challenges confronting the fishing industry that may be related to the use of technology. If the fisheries are to become more sustainable, the development of new technological solutions has to bear in mind requirements given in the “paradigm” of a sustainable fisheries system.
