Dr. Iseult Lynch, UCD School of Chemistry & Chemical Biology - Nanotechnology refers to the use of very tiny (nanoscale) materials in a range of novel ways. Nano means tiny, and nanoparticles are tiny particles, more than 8000 times smaller than a human hair. Applications of nanotechnology in electronics and medicine have been discussed at a previous lecture in this series, where the small size and large surface area lead to entirely new approaches and innovative solutions to treating disease and improving the speed and size of electronic devices. These same properties of nanoparticles make them suitable for a range of environmental applications, both in terms of improving (reacting to) existing environmental problems or by anticipating and preventing future environmental problems (proactive). Some of the greatest potential uses or applications for nanotechnology in the environment are sensors, treatment, remediation, and green nanotech manufacturing and engineering. See the event website for more details.
