Since the industrial revolution began in the 1880s, technological advances that have made our lives easier have often had significant consequences for the environment, particularly as a result of combustion of fossil fuels which results in the production of particles of matter which remain in the atmosphere. The nanotechnology revolution is simply the next phase of the ongoing industrial revolution – the challenge now being that the particles in question are in many cases too small to “see” easily, but this does not mean that they are not there! Far from it. The scope and reach of nanotechnology is dazzling – it is termed an “enabling technology” as it will impact on almost all aspects of our lives, from faster and cheaper electronics, to new approaches to medicines and therapies, to smarter packaging materials and self-cleaning surfaces. All types of sensing, recording and monitoring will rely on nanote
