The Marine Institute recently offered students who are interested in marine research, the opportunity to undertake a research survey in Irish waters on board the national Research Vessel, RV Celtic Voyager. This award is a component of the funding secured by the Marine Institute for the Integrated Marine Exploration (IME) Programme under the Government’s Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (SSTI).
The Bright Sparks Competition aims are to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate students to the Marine Institute’s Research Vessel facilities and to provide experience in the following areas:
- Preparation and submission of research proposals;
- Design, planning and execution of scientific surveys;
- Analysis of survey data;
- Preparation of final survey report;
- Presentation of the results and findings.

Results:
The successful applicant was Mr. Emmett Clarkin, Queen's University, Belfast for a survey titled "Rafts, plankton and jellyfish: their value as biological indicators of different water masses? ". Additional information on the successful project is available from funding@marine.ie
