PhD Scholarship in The Ecology of Salmon at Sea
The Marine Institute and its’ partners, the Loughs Agency and the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway, are pleased to announce a call for proposals from academic institutions to host a PhD scholar to carry out research aimed at furthering our understanding of recent dynamics of North Atlantic salmon populations from the North East Atlantic and in particular the underlying reasons for the persistent decline in stocks over the past two decades.
The project also aims to provide essential data for the development of forecasting models for numbers and size of returning fish as a basic input to national and international salmon fisheries management. As similar environmental factors are likely to be influencing other important marine fish (mackerel, herring and other pelagics), the study aims to provide an ecosystems context for inter-species interactions which will provide a better understand of the recruitment and ecological processes in the pelagic zone.
Proposals are invited from Higher Education Institutions on the Island of Ireland with the necessary competence and facilities to host/supervise the PhD Scholar.
Full details on the objectives of the proposed research, information on the application procedure and terms and conditions are available in the Call for Proposals, pdf 174kb (opens in a new window).
Closing date for receipt of Application Forms, doc 298kb (opens in a new window) (by email) to salmonphd@marine.ie is 16:00 HOURS on Friday, 14th October 2011.
Responses to all requests emailed to salmonphd@marine.ie for further information/clarifications will be posted here, pdf 80kb, (opens in a new window).
