The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is the EU’s main RTD funding programme for the period 2007-2013 (Budget: €50 billion). Marine science and technology is identified as a priority cross-cutting theme.
FP7 is made up of four Specific Programmes:
- Cooperation (€32.4bn)
- Capacities (€4.1bn)
- People (€4.75bn)
- Ideas (€7.5bn)

The EU CORDIS Servicse has released a new on-line database providing information on al EU, FP5, FP6 and FP7 projects funded between 1986-2011.
Irish Researchers involvement in FP7 Marine Projects (2007 - 2010):
Over the period 2007-2010, 43 Irish marine research groups, including knowledge-based SMEs, are participating in 64 FP7 collaborative projects and drawing down grant-aid in excess of €23.7 million. In 2011, a further 21 marine projects with Irish participation have been approved subject to successful contract negotiation.
Convergence with National Programmes
Both Ireland's Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation and Sea Change Strategy recognise and stress the importance of international research collaboration. To underpin this goal, there are a range of dedicated and proactive support services to help both new and experienced Framework Programme applicants.
