PhD Grant - Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz

Microbial formation of marine manganese crusts (Mainz, Germany)

A two plus one year PhD fellowship is avaiable in the interdisciplinary Earth System Science Research Centre Geocycles at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz.  The project comprises laboratory experiements in cooperation with molecular biologists addressing the formation and growth of manganese crusts and nodules in a marine environment as well as nano-structural and - compositional investigation of experimental and natural samples.  The latter will be carried out with state-of-the-art micro- and nano-analytical facilities available at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz (e.g. SEM, TEM, LA-ICP-MS etc.) and with synchrotron methods.  For further information you may visit Earth System Science Research Centre and also Biomineralisation Institute of Geosciences on the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz website.

Deadline: 15 November 2009
