Project Summary:
This research is investigating whether the subtle influences of environmental impacts using ‘biomarkers’ can be detected. The first direct experimental evidence about whether biomarkers are sensitive enough to predict changes in the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems due to contaminants will be presented. This research will also provide the crucial information to allow environmental managers to choose the best techniques to protect and enhance the environment, in line with the European Water and Marine Strategy Framework Directives, and the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic.
