Funding Year: 2007
Project Duration: 84 months
Project Type: Capacity Building
Total Grant-Aid: €1,545,257
Lead Partner: University College Dublin (Marine & Petroleum Geology Research Group)
Project Summary:
UCD's Marine & Petroleum Geology Research Group is involved in a broad range of linked research strands with a unifying theme being the understanding of deep water and slope depositional processes and the resulting sedimentary architecture. The overall research objectives of the research programme are to address fundamental scientific issues with regard to gravity flow processes, external forcing of sedimentary systems, reservoir architecture and basin analysis. The prospects for subsurface CO2 sequestration in the vicinity of the Shannon estuary will also be investigated. Co. Clare will be established as the premier global training site for the deep water hydrocarbon industry and a showcase for Irish geoscience. The research group will use the funding to carry out research on a range of topics, including a major new initiative on the Carboniferous succession of the Co. Clare region.
