Project Summary:
The efficient functioning of ecosystems apparently depends on the number of species present, but we do not yet understand how. By experimentally modifying diversity of seaweeds in aquaria and natural rock pools, this project will determine whether it is the number of species, their identities or what they do that matters. It will also investigate how species interactions affect ecosystem functioning and how that is affected by changing environmental conditions. The overall aim is to help develop enough understanding to predict effects of losing biodiversity, so that appropriate steps can be taken to minimise negative consequences for nature and society.
