Project Summary
The overall aim of this project will be to integrate the tacit knowledge in the fishing industry for use in the scientific assessment, advisory and fisheries management process.
This project addresses one of the key objectives of Sea Change in that it will increase the transparency of scientific advice through increased stakeholder interaction and participation and use of fishing industry knowledge in the scientific advisory process. It is accepted that fishery research and management would be more effective if it made more frequent use of fishers as data collectors and better use of “local” or “fishers” or “traditional” knowledge. This project will deliver new methodology and processes that capture, collate and integrate the tacit knowledge in the fishing industry for use in the scientific assessment, advisory and fisheries management process.
The results of this project will also support the Strategy for a Restructured, Profitable and Sustainable Irish Seafood Industry in that the tacit knowledge of industry can be used to inform management plans for the sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources off the Irish Coast (Anon. 2007).
This project is carried out under the Sea Change strategy with the support of the Marine Institute and the Marine Research Sub-programme of the National Development Plan 2007–2013, co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund.
