On the 22nd-23rd March 2010, the Marine Institute host an Industry orientated workshop Towards A New Horizon, Harnessing Ireland's Potential as a European and Global Centre for Ocean Technology. The workshop highlighted market-led opportunities for the development and deployment of distributed sensing, communication and information technologies in global markets including Ocean Energy, Marine Environment, Shipping, Logistics and Security. The event showcased Ireland’s current capabilities in the industrial and the third level sector for the development of disruptive technologies and decision-based management tools.
 
Speakers and participants included representatives from Indigenous companies, Multinationals and National Research Centres. Representatives from key development agencies including SFI, EI, SEI, EPA and the IDA also attended.
 
A draft National Ocean Technology Strategy was launched at the event for consultation.
