The Marine Institute provides advisory services to Government through participation in a number of licensing committees and working groups on foreshore licensing, aquaculture licensing, dumping at sea, offshore oil and gas activity and the implementation of the Water Framework Directive.
The Marine Institute chairs and provides technical staff to the Marine Licence Vetting Committee (MLVC ) of the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government which deals with foreshore licencing and to the Environmental Protection Agency which deals with licensing for disposal of dredge material at sea.
The Marine Institute plays a role in the regulation and licensing of marine and freshwater aquaculture through participation on the Aquaculture Licence Advisory Committee of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
We provide technical advice to the Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on the environmental impact of offshore oil and gas activity.
Marine Institute staff are also involved in a number of working groups and advisory committees on the Water Framework Directive.
