IME Programme and Deep Sea Research

The Integrated Marine Exploration (IME) programme aims to support and develop Ireland’s national and international deep sea research activity and forms a critical component of Ireland’s input into the development of the Deep Sea Frontier Initiative and other deep sea RTDI. The purpose of the initiative is to increase capacity in research undertaken into the complex and interlinked physical, geological, chemical, ecological, biological and microbial processes that take place in the deep sea. This includes activities into deep sea cabled observatory projects such as ESONET NoE and the European Marine Seas Observatory (EMSO) preparatory phase.

The MI are also partners in the Euro Argo preparatory phase, which is a global array of autonomous instruments, deployed over the world ocean, reporting subsurface ocean properties to a wide range of users via satellite transmission links to data centres.

The Marine Institute has invested in long term monitoring programmes such as the Smart Bay project, and integrated data visualisation tools such as our Integrated Marine Observations.

This project is funded by the SSTI
