The development of real-time PCR methods for the detection of viruses in shellfish has allowed the study of viral contamination in growing areas. The MI is currently investigating methods to reduce the risk of viral contamination in growing areas by developing better risk based management procedures. To this end the MI has recently completed a project with colleagues in four European Countries identifying conditions leading to viral contamination in shellfisheries Red Risk Report.

Currently we are using the information gathered from this project to develop and trial risk management procedures in a number of shellfisheries in Ireland. For more information on the risk management procedures for viruses in shellfish please contact Bill Doré.
