Recent EU funded projects have advanced the provision of operational oceanographic services in Europe. The MERSEA Integrated Project has looked at the provision of ocean basin scale forecast model outputs to a variety of intermediate users such as the MI. The European Coastal Shelf Sea Operational Observing and Forecasting System (ECOOP) Integrated Project will take the products made available by MERSEA and fine tune them to meet a variety of applications in European Coastal Seas such as:
- Ecosystem models
- HAB warning systems
- Oil spill and contaminant dispersion and forecast studies
- Maritime ship routing applications
The Oceanographic Services team at MI is a partner in the project with 70+ European partners including Techworks Marine and CMRC involved from an Irish standpoint.
The ECOOP project kick-off meeting takes place on March 01st and 02nd at the Marine Institute, Ireland. The group attending the meeting will include the influential operational oceanographers from all European Seas including the Arctic, Mediterranean, NW Shelf, Baltic, Black Sea and Iberia Biscay Ireland systems of EuroGOOS.
