Mill Race Fish Trapping Facilities in Newport, Co.Mayo Salmon Leap Fish trapping facilities at Newport, Co. Mayo
'Mill Race Trap' & 'Salmon Leap Trap'

The Marine Institute's Newport Facilities includes a comprehensively monitored freshwater lake and river catchment. These fish trapping operations, conducted at installations lying between Loughs Furnace and Feeagh, possess the unique advantage of being able to monitor all movements of fish to and from freshwater.

The “Salmon Leap Trap” and the “Mill Race Trap” constructed in 1959, both monitor fish moving upstream and downstream. These traps enable full census to be carried out on wild salmon, released reared salmon, sea trout and eels. And the “Shrarevagh River Trap” allows the isolation of a small portion of the upper catchement for carrying out detailed studies related to juvenile fish production and fish genetics.
