Fish Rearing Facilities

Fish Rearing Facilities at Newport
  Fish Rearing Facilities at Newport

In Newport, the Marine Institute runs a comprehensive range of freshwater salmonid fish rearing facilities. These facilities range from collection and holding of broodstock, egg incubation and two isolated hatchery units and both indoor and outdoor pond rearing areas in four separated locations. The rearing facilities support a wide range of both commercial and research and development projects on brown trout, rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon.

Recent projects have included the development of triploidy in farmed and ranched salmon, feed and vaccine trials, salmon ranching and sea trout broodstock and enhancement. The design of the rearing facilities, including state of the art effluent treatment, allows for R&D projects to be undertaken in either isolated ponds or in a commercial situation mimicking conditions on a commercial farm.
