Scientists taking water samples at sea

The basis of almost all scientific research is data collection and analysis and marine research is no different. While studying the marine environment samples from the study area are collected so that they can be tested or measured. Sampling can include animals, plants, waters and seabed sediments.

This will provide the necessary data that will reveal information about conditions and habitats in the area under investigation.

The Marine Institute is involved in many scientific surveys to generate the data needed to assess and monitor marine resources, in order to ensure sustainable development into the future. Sampling surveys are regularly undertaken for many fish species found in Irish waters, both on the continental shelf and deep sea. Other surveys can include such diverse subjects as assessments of in-shore seaweed, coastal development and leisure activities, phytoplankton, farmed shellfish, salmon farming and the chemical composition of the seabed.
