Explorers STEM and STEAM Projects

The Marine Institute and the Explorers Education team supports activities involving meeting marine scientists and creating projects in schools where STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and STEAM (including arts) can be adopted.

The following section provides concepts that teachers may like to develop with their classes to help students become marine champions of the future.

Over 300 primary school children from around the Ireland took part in the Explorers Education marine heritage project called 'Our Ocean – Marine Legends, Fairy Tales and Folklore in Ireland'.
The Circular Revolution - Towards Zero Image
The Circular Revolution - Towards Zero
The Circular Revolution - Towards Zero schools project and art exhibition was completed by twelve schools involving over 750 children in Co Clare. The project was led by artist and Explorers Education officer Carmel T. Madigan from Loophead Summer Hedge School, where the children considered how to reuse discarded materials from their local beaches in creative ways – so as to generate zero-waste.

Build Your Own Unknown – Art and Marine Science Project places art, marine science and technology in the heart of the classroom creating an art installation and short animated film about marine life and hydrothermal activity under the sea.

Atlantic Mini Boat Regatta
The transatlantic funded programme AORA-CSA formed a partnership in 2016 with Dick Baldwin’s Educational Passages mini-sailboats in the USA, and together are running an Atlantic Mini-boat Regatta: “Around the Atlantic – Our Shared Resource”.

Over one hundred primary school students in Galway and County Galway created seven original pieces of artwork based on the theme of “Our Ocean – Our Future,” with the aim to celebrate Ireland’s incredible ocean wealth and raise awareness about our responsibility towards the ocean and its ecosystems.
