Marine Research in Ireland Overview

Marine research is carried out in 13 Irish HEIs (7 universities and 6 Institutes of Technology) across the full spectrum of themes - fisheries and aquaculture, marine biodiscovery/biotechnology, marine functional foods, marine technology, marine environment and policy support.

Ireland has an active marine research community supported by growing marine research infrastructure. Ireland’s marine research sector secured over €71m in EU grant-aid funding through competitive calls 2007-2013.

At the Marine Institute we carry out research, stimulate, fund and coordinate marine research and innovation programmes to support the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine resources.

Science Foundation Ireland have recently launched the publication Ireland's Research and Development Funders which provides details on national funding agencies, including the Marine Institute.

We attempt to record all marine related projects funded in Ireland through national and international funding schemes.  Details on research projects funded from 2007 to date are provided in the Research Database. Projects are searchable by various queries.

If you have received marine research funding and your project is not listed, please forward the details to the Marine Research Office at mro [at] marine [dot] ie.
