Ship-Time Programme 2021


The Marine Institute invites applications for grant-aid towards the cost of ship-time onboard the national research vessel R.V. Celtic Voyager during 2021.

Note: Available ship-time on the R.V. Celtic Explorer in 2021 has already been allocated from applications received for the 2020/2021 call last year that closed in September 2019.

Grant-aid will be provided for ship-time to carry out:


Research for ship-time in 2021 will be funded under the relevant themes of the National Marine Research & Innovation Strategy 2017-2021 which are detailed in the Guidelines for Applicants. Applications will be accepted from research performing organisations (Higher Education Institutions, Public Research Bodies and Industry) on the island of Ireland to carry out ship-based research activity under these themes. Expected vessel availability for research surveys is currently:

Applications will be expected to demonstrated how the proposed work addresses national priorities or EU/international legislative requirements within the above themes and to provide clear evidence of expected deliverables/outputs. Collaborative and/or multi-disciplinary applications that fully utilise the research capabilities of the vessels are strongly encouraged.

Dedicated Training Programmes

Applications will be accepted from Higher Education Institutions and Public Research Bodies on the island of Ireland to provide dedicated undergraduate and/or postgraduate training programmes onboard the vessels. Applicants are advised to contact the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology who are responsible for co-ordinating national training for third-level students in marine-related science and technologies (email: smart [at] gmit [dot] ie) prior to submitting their application.

Expected vessel availability for training programmes on the Celtic Voyager is 60 days in 2021.

N.B. There is a two-step process as follows:

  1. Applicants must complete and online application for use of the ship via the Survey Planning System (SPS) and should take note of the application reference.
  2. Applications requesting funding must complete an online application for grant-aid funding (via the Research Information Management System (RIMS), quoting the reference obtained from SPS.

The closing date for receipt of applications on RIMS is Thursday, 10th September 2020 at 17:00.

Late applications will not be accepted.
