Summary of the Role:

The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) will work closely with the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Principal Investigator on delivering the research for the MEESO project. They will help produce important ecosystem data and information on the nature of the Deep Scattering Layer/Mesopelagic community and the ecosystem that supports and drives that community. The main tasks will be:

    • Collecting and analysing new data and material from the Marine Institute acoustic surveys in Atlantic waters.
    • This will involve working with the acoustic survey team on the collection of detailed acoustic data, as well as sampling the mesopelagic biota.
    • It will also involve working with other project partners on the deployment of novel sampling tools including optical and wide band acoustic systems, as well as new sampling nets.
    • Where possible, biological sampling will also include collecting information on stomach contents, trophic status and vital rates.
    • As appropriate, the role will also involve the collection of additional oceanographic data to characterise the mesopelagic ecosystem.
    • Combining the above to build as full a picture as possible of the DSL/mesopelagic community as possible. This will include statistical analyse and modelling.
    • Working with the PI to develop a synthesis of the project work and prepare for publication.

Duration of Contract:

The maximum duration of this temporary specified purpose contract of employment will be four years. The successful candidate will be on probation for the first six months of this contract.
