Temporary Water Framework Directive Monitoring Programme Co-ordinator – Team Leader
Summary of the Role:
The team leader/project coordinator will primarily be responsible for project managing the implementation of the WFD and SWD programme for Transitional and Coastal Waters and other related environmental monitoring activities as appropriate. This will involve coordinating sampling and field measurement activities, coordinating and carrying out laboratory analysis externally and at MI, managing and assessing data, and providing technical reporting to our clients within agreed time frames. The coordinator will ensure that all work follows best quality assurance practices and conforms to MI ISO 17025 quality systems and ensure data are well managed and stored. The coordinator will also supervise the WFD team, in liaison with technical managers.
Background to Requirement:
Water Framework Directive The Water Framework Directive (WFD Directive 2000/60/EC) came into force in December 2000 and establishes a framework for the protection of inland surface waters, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater. The EPA is the competent authority in Ireland for implementing this directive and they have nominated the Marine Institute to carry out monitoring of certain quality elements in transitional and coastal waters; specifically, phytoplankton, benthic invertebrates, relevant pollutants and priority substances. There are strong links to other directives and marine monitoring requirements such as those required of shellfish waters (Directive 2006/113/EC) and under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive 2008/56/EC. Duration of Contract:
The contract will be issued on a temporary specified purpose basis for a duration of up to 6 years subject to funding. There will be a 12 month probationary period.
