The Marine Institute is a non-commercial, semi-state body which was formally established by statute in October 1992. We are the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realise the economic potential of Ireland’s 220 million acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programmes and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other government departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners.
Summary of the Role
The attendant will primarily be responsible for carrying out a range of duties in support of the Water Framework (WFD) monitoring programme team which includes preparations of samples (e.g. biota, sediment and water) for analysis. This will contribute to monitoring programmes and relevant research initiatives. Support for new method development, optimisation and validation will form an important aspect of the role.
Among the duties and responsibilities include:
Provide support for chemical analysis carried out in the laboratory through preparation of glassware and samples
Support sampling and field monitoring by preparing and checking equipment, preparing sampling kits, cleaning vessels etc. as required
Carry out duties in support of the Marine Institute’s ISO17025 compliant quality system, such as equipment calibration, verification etc.
Maintain stocks of materials in the laboratories and to carry out general laboratory housekeeping and maintenance of sample storage facilities
Keep paper and electronic records of laboratory activities as appropriate in line with MI quality system
Conduct laboratory analysis as required

Educational and Professional Requirements
Leaving Certificate or equivalent
Relevant work experience providing general support ideally in an environmental laboratory
Good working knowledge of MS Office package
Ability to work on own initiative
Strong communication skills
Remuneration is in accordance with the Public Sector, Department of Finance approved salary scale for Laboratory Attendants, with a salary scale of €22,121-€31,768 per annum pro-rated with time worked. You will become a member of the Single Public Service pension scheme.
Duration of Contract
The contract will be issued on a temporary specified purpose basis for a time period up to 31st December 2021 subject to continued WFD Funding.
