Marine Institute looks forward to Science Week 2019

Photo: Joe O'Shaughnessy.The Marine Institute welcomes the recent announcement that 13 festivals and 13 events, funded through Science Foundation Ireland, will be held as part of National Science Week 2019, from 10th – 17th November.

The Marine Institute will exhibit at the Galway Science and Technology Fair on Sunday 24th November and the Mayo Science and Technology Fair on Sunday 17th November 2019. These events offer talks, exhibits, demonstrations and workshops for primary students, to inspire and educate students about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This year’s Science Week will focus on climate action, seeking to help people understand climate change, how science and technology can help us create a positive climate future and the impact we as individuals can have on climate change.

Dr Peter Heffernan, CEO of the Marine Institute said, “The Marine Institute will be a part of the Galway and Mayo Science and Technology Festivals again this year and showcase the work of the Institute. Our ocean and climate are inextricably linked, and a changing climate is one of the greatest challenges facing society. These outreach events will offer an opportunity to engage parents and children on how we observe and understand how our ocean is changing, to help us forecast and project future patterns of change.”

The Marine Institute will be joined by outreach team members from the Explorers Education Programme, which inspires school teachers and their students’ to develop their interest, knowledge and engagement in our ocean.

Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD, and Minister for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development, John Halligan TD, announced an investment of €476,000 through Science Foundation Ireland, to support 13 festivals and 13 events across the country as part of national Science Week.

The Galway Science and Technology Fair is the largest National Science Week event held in Ireland will be held at NUI Galway on Sunday 24th November. The Mayo Science and Technology Fair will be held at GMIT Castlebar on Sunday 18th November.
