The Marine Institute invites applications for grant-aid towards the cost of shiptime onboard the national research vessels (R.V. Celtic Explorer and R.V. Celtic Voyager) during 2018 and 2019. Grant-aid will be provided for shiptime to carry out:

Research

Research for shiptime in 2018 and 2019 will be funded under the relevant themes of the National Marine Research & Innovation Strategy 2021 (published in 2017), which are detailed in the Guidelines for Applicants. Applications will be accepted from research performing organisations (Higher Education Institutions, Public Research Bodies and Industry) within the island of Ireland to carry out ship-based research activity under these themes. Expected vessel availability for research surveys is currently:

  • R.V. Celtic Explorer: 2018 - 27 days and 2019 - 65 days
  • R.V. Celtic Voyager: 2018 - 75 days and 2019 - 80 days
  • ROV Holland I: 2018 - 120 days and 2019 - 100 days

Applicants will be expected to demonstrate how the proposed work addresses national priorities or EU/international legislative requirements within the above themes and to provide clear evidence of expected deliverables/outputs. Collaborative and/or multi-disciplinary applications that fully utilise the research capabilities of the vessels are strongly encouraged.

Dedicated Training Programmes

Applications will be accepted from Higher Education Institutions and Public Research Bodies within the island of Ireland, to provide dedicated undergraduate and/or postgraduate training programmes onboard the vessels. Applicants are advised to contact the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology who are responsible for co-ordinating national training for third-level student in marine-related science and technologies (email: smart@gmit.ie) prior to submitting their application. Expected vessel availability for training programmes is currently:
