JPI Oceans Joint Call on Blue Carbon Ecosystems 2025

The Marine Institute is delighted to support the newly launched JPI Oceans Joint Call on Blue Carbon Ecosystems with a deadline for proposal submissions on 2 March 2026. This call pools national and regional financial resources totaling €5.3 million through the participation of funding organisations from seven countries (Ireland, Canada, Germany, Malta, Norway and Poland, with Greece providing an in-kind contribution through access to the Seagrass Ecology Laboratory of the Institute of Oceanography).

The Marine Institute is the national funder for Ireland (and lead country) under this call with a commitment of €1,000,000.

The importance of protecting and restoring blue carbon ecosystems is embedded in both European and international frameworks, including the EU Nature Restoration Regulation and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This Call is also closely aligned with the objectives of the UN Ocean Decade and its Global Programme for Blue Carbon (GO-BC), contributing to international efforts to generate knowledge and solutions for climate and biodiversity action.

This Joint Call will fund projects addressing one or more of the following themes:

1.    Carbon stocks and fluxes at local and regional scales, including the climate protection (or mitigation) impact of CO2 and of the relevant non-CO2 GHG emissions such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O).
2.     Blue carbon ecosystems’ resilience and vulnerability to climate change impacts, eutrophication, dredging, trawling, tourism, and other anthropogenic pressures.
3.    Effectiveness and scalability of blue carbon restoration and protection measures, including Nature-based Solutions.

The full call details including details of national guidelines for Irish partners are published on the JPI Oceans website at: Joint Call on Blue Carbon Ecosystems | JPI Oceans.

Applicants will have up to 2 March 2026 (14h CET – 13h Irish Standard Time) to submit their proposals.

As the lead country for this joint call, all applications should be submitted via the Marine Institute’s portal by the proposal coordinator.
