JPI Oceans Joint Call: Consequences of Changing Marine Lightscapes

The Marine Institute is delighted to support the newly launched JPI Oceans Joint Call: Consequences of Changing Marine Lightscapes with a deadline for proposal submissions on 30 May 2024. This call pools national and regional financial resources totalling €3.7 million through the participation of funding organisations from seven countries. The Marine Institute is the national funder for Ireland under this call with a commitment of €250,000.

This call aims to close critical gaps in our understanding of the drivers and ecological impacts of changing marine lightscapes resulting from both Coastal Darkening and Artificial Light at Night.

Proposals should address one or more of the following consequences of changing marine lightscapes:

•    Biodiversity, biogeography, and biogeochemistry, including primary production
•    Photobiology and ecophysiology, including light-induced seasonal timing of organismal behaviour
•    Ecosystem functioning and food web architecture, and ecosystem services including sustainable fisheries

Proposal consortia must have at least two countries, with funding available for Irish partners being 250,000 Euro per proposal for Public Research Performing Organisations and for Industry/Private RPOs for three years (max of two Irish partners per proposal), which is being funded by the Marine Institute.

A budget template for Irish partners is available from funding@marine.ie. The full call details including details of national guidelines for Irish partners are published on the JPI Oceans website at Joint Call launch: Consequences of Changing Marine Lightscapes.

Applicants will have up to 30 May 2024 (17h CET – 16h Irish time) to submit their proposals. The portal for submission of proposals will be available at the following site later in April: https://jpio-lightscapes.eu.
