Ship-Time Programme 2025
The Marine Institute invites applications for grant-aid towards the cost of ship-time on-board the national research vessels R.V. Celtic Explorer and Tom Crean during 2025 for research and training as follows.
Research
To carry out research that addresses national and international strategic priorities, with key objectives being to support sustainable economic growth, promote innovation towards a carbon neutral economy, protect marine ecosystems and inform policy, governance and regulation of the Irish marine sector.
Applications will be accepted from research performing organisations (Higher Education Institutions, Public Research Bodies and Industry) on the island of Ireland to carry out ship-based research activity under these themes.
Applicants will be expected to demonstrate how the proposed work addresses national strategic priorities and EU or international legislative requirements and to provide clear evidence of expected deliverables, impacts and outputs.
Collaborative and multi-disciplinary applications that fully utilise the research capabilities of the vessels are strongly encouraged.

Dedicated Training Programmes
Applications will be accepted from Higher Education Institutions and Public Research Bodies on the island of Ireland, to provide dedicated undergraduate and/or postgraduate training programmes onboard the vessels.
Applicants are advised to contact the Strategic Marine Alliance for Research and Training, Atlantic Technological University, Galway who are responsible for co-ordinating national training for third-level student in marine-related science and technologies (email John.Boyd@atu.ie) prior to submitting their application.

N.B. There is a two-step process as follows:
- Applicants must complete an online application for use of the ship via the Survey Planning System (SPS) and should take note of the application reference.
- Applicants requesting funding must complete an online application for grant-aid funding (via the Research Information Management System (RIMS), quoting the reference obtained from SPS.
The closing date for receipt of applications on RIMS is Wednesday, 19 June 2024 at 17:00. Applications for funding will be accepted for 2025 only.
LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
