Temporary Scientific Technical Officer Marine Biodiversity and Foodwebs
Summary of the Role:
The Scientific Technical Officer will work within MI FEAS to conduct data analysis and assessments of fish data under the Biodiversity Descriptor 1 and to understand and quantify trophic interactions of marine food-webs in Ireland, with particular emphasis on fish.
Background to Requirement:
The Marine Institute is building up its capacity in ecosystem related disciplines, in order to support Ireland’s obligations under the EU’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the OSPAR Commission on Protecting and Conserving the Northeast Atlantic. The impact of human pressures including commercial fisheries on marine biodiversity and food-webs is an important consideration in the implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Descriptor 1&4) and the Habitats and Bird’s directives. Through a Service Level Agreement with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government, the Marine Institute has a responsibility to assess anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity and marine food-webs. Duration of Contract:
This temporary specified purpose contract of employment will be for the period up to the end of December 2023, subject to continued funding. The successful candidate will be on probation for the first six months of this contract.
