The Ocean is Largely Unexplored
The ocean is the largest unexplored place on Earth. It is said that only 5% of the ocean has been explored. This provides great opportunities for discovery, innovation, inventions and investigation. Mervyn shares some great ideas for science, history, art and English activities, learning about John Phillip Holland and the history of submarines.
The modernisation of the submarine has helped us expand our ability to explore the deepest parts of the ocean all around the world. Submarines are used by a wide range of people and countries. Many countries around the world use submarines as part of their military fleets to monitor countries borders at sea. They are also used for marine research, scientific discoveries, monitoring of oil and gas rigs at sea, salvage of shipwrecks, and even tourism.
Some of our favourite cross curricular activities provide children the opportunity to investigate the idea of ocean exploration learning about submarines.
LESSON PLAN, ACTIVITIES & WORKSHEETS:
Lesson plan: John Phillip Holland and the science and history of Submarines
The lesson plan provides children the opportunity to learn about John Phillip Holland, who was responsible for influencing the design of submarines and the history of submarines. The activities include • Completing fun science experiments investigating why heavy ships float and how a key can sink in the ocean • Exploring how submarines can sink and float • Create a colláge of John Phillip Holland • Write a personal letter to John Phillip Holland • Designing a futuristic submarine.
RESOURCES:
Discussion sheets for introductions to the activities.
1. Investigating why ships float and keys sink
2. The life and history of John Phillip Holland
3. A short history of Submarines and Submersibles
ACTIVITIES:
It is recommended that the activities are completed in the following order:
1. INVESTIGATING WHY SHIPS FLOAT AND KEYS SINK
Did you ever wonder why a heavy metal ship could float and a small metal key would sink? Complete the following experiments to discover why:
SCIENCE: Investigating why ships float and keys sink
1.1. Water Displacement
1.2. Density of Objects - Will it Sink or Float
1.3. Volume and Weight - Apple vs Paper clip
1.4. Surface Area and Buoyancy - Creating a boat that can float
1.5. Investigating why ships float and keys sink - Write your conclusion
2. THE LIFE AND HISTORY OF JOHN PHILLIP HOLLAND AND INVESTIGATING HOW SUBMARINES SINK AND FLOAT
