Wave Energy Test Facilities

In Ireland, wave energy and technology test facilities are available spanning all technology readiness levels.  You can find the complete details about each test facility on Ireland's Marine Renewable Energy Portal.  The Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site (AMETS) is being developed by Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to facilitate testing of full scale wave energy converters in an open ocean environment.

The National Ocean Test Facility offers testing at the Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (UCC). The NOTF has wave basin and flume facilitates which can test devices up to 1/15th scale.  The Galway Bay 1/4 scale Wave Energy Test Site is located 1.5km offshore in water depths ranging from 20m – 23m.  The license for the site has been held by the Marine Institute since 2006.  The research infrastructure on the site has recently been upgraded with the Galway Bay Sub Sea Cable Observatory. This provides a cabled national test and demonstration facility for marine energy and technology.
