Renowned tenor Owen Gilhooly will join the National Workplace Choir of the Year, the Marine Institute Singers and SSE Airtricity’s workplace choir, the SSE Airs, for a concert of choral music in the Augustinian Church, Middle Street Galway on Saturday 11th June.
Entitled ‘Midsummer Melodies’ the concert will feature well known favourites from the popular choral repertoire as well as contemporary pieces.
The event is being held in association with COPE Galway and funds raised from the event will go to support their ongoing work helping the homeless in Galway City.
Formed in 2013, the Marine Institute Singers won the National Workplace Choir Competition last September and have established a reputation as one of the freshest, exciting sounding choirs to have emerged from Galway in recent years.
The choir is delighted to present this joint concert with the SSE Airs who last year won the Clef Club Award for Mixed Voice Choirs at the RDS Feis Ceoil in Dublin and the Opera Shield for Mixed Choirs at the AIMS Choral Festival in Wexford.
“The Marine Institute Singers are very excited to welcome our friends in the SSE Airs, to Galway for this joint concert,” says Marine Institute Singers conductor Carmel Dooley.
“We are especially delighted to be joined by Owen Gilhooly one of Ireland’s finest baritones for what promises to be an evening of wonderful music”, she added.
SSE Airs conductor Ruaidhrí O’Dalaigh added, “We’re really looking forward to performing alongside the Marine Institute Singers for what promises to be a great night. The most important thing is that people come out and support this event and raise vital funding and awareness for the ongoing work of COPE Galway.”
The concert will commence at 8pm on Saturday 11th June.
