Ireland’s Strategy for Marine Research, Innovation & Knowledge Overview

Under the 1991 Marine Institute Act, the Institute has the general functions “to undertake, to co-ordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to marine research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute will promote economic development and create employment and protect the environment.” The Institute coordinates the development of national marine research and innovation in close cooperation with government departments and agencies, including the Marine Research Funders’ Forum.

A National Marine Research and Innovation Strategy was published in 2017. As part of the preparation of the Strategy, a detailed review of national and European policies and strategies in relation to the marine was undertaken. This process identified the 15 major themes that are considered under the Strategy.
