Scoil Chaitríona Junior, Renmore, Galway, has been crowned the national winner of the Explorers Ocean Champion School Awards 2023 for their Healthy Ocean project, ‘Caring for our Ocean’. They shared stories about the ocean with a primary school in France, performed at the Marino Institute of Further Education and at the Féile Scoildrámaíochta inter-school drama competition.

The Marine Institute’s Explorers Education Programme is delighted to announce that six Explorers marine themed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) five-day teacher-training courses (July 3-7) have been approved by the Department of Education and Skills and are now available to book with education centres in Galway, Kerry, West Cork, Waterford, Blackrock Dublin, as well as an online course run through Mayo Education Centre (July 3 – August 18).

100 Primary school teachers learn about the ocean with the Marine Institute’s Explorers Education Programme
The Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programmes' five day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) teachers training courses 'Exploring Ireland's seashore' have been successfully delivered to over seventy teachers in Waterford, Kerry, Galway, and for the first time to teachers from Cork. A further forty teachers are also completing the programme online.

A Summer Mini-Miracle! 'Seoltóir Na Gaillimhe – the Galway Sailor' mini sail boat found washed up in Norway
The Marine Institute's Explorers Education Programme and Educational Passages are delighted to report that the 1.5 metre unmanned mini sailboat called 'Seoltóir Na Gaillimhe – the Galway Sailor', that was deployed in June, was recently found stranded on the Bunes Beach above the Arctic Circle in the Lofoten Islands, in Norway.

Unmanned miniature Sail boat ‘Seoltóir Na Gaillimhe – the Galway Sailor’ to be deployed from the RV Celtic Explorer
On Monday 31st May, a group of students from 5th and 6th class from Kilglass National School in Co Galway delivered their 1.5 metre unmanned mini sailboat called 'Seoltóir Na Gaillimhe – the Galway Sailor' to the Marine Institute's research vessel, RV Celtic Explorer, in Galway Harbour. Marine Institute scientists will deploy the mini-boat from the RV Celtic Explorer into the Atlantic Ocean, near the M6 Weather Buoy, during the AIMSIR (Atlantic In-situ Marine Scientific Infrastructure Replacement) survey.
