Data Collection Framework

Distribution of landings by ICES areas around IrelandData Collection is an important part of supporting the delivery of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). It provides a wide range of fisheries data needed for scientific advice in the management of the fishery resource. This data is used in the assessment of the state of exploited marine resources, marine ecosystem and the socio economic performance of fisheries, aquaculture and processing sectors. The Marine Institute and Board Iascaigh Mhara are responsible for the coordination and collection of scientific and economic data to meet Ireland’s obligations under the EU Data Collection Framework (DCF).

In order to collect this data our work programme includes a comprehensive research vessel survey programme, port sampling of landings, sea sampling of discards, age profile of the fisheries resource, analyses of EU logbook and vessel monitoring systems data.

The EU data collection programme commenced in 2002, based on Commission Regulation (EC) No 1639/2001 up to and including Council Regulation 199/2008, the framework for the collection, management and use of data in the fisheries sector.

All information regarding Ireland's data collection work programme can be found on our dedicated DCF website. Ireland’s DCF Programme is supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
