New Summer CPD Teacher Training Course in Galway launched

New Summer CPD Teacher Training Course in Galway launched to cover Climate Action and Marine Biodiversity The Marine Institute’s Explorers Education Programme and Galway Education Centre are pleased to announce the launch of the new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) teacher-summer training course, ‘SDGs and a Healthy Ocean: Marine Life, Plastic Pollution & Climate Change which will be held in Galway from 1st- 5th July. The course is now available for bookings at the Education Centre.

Focussed on learning more about the ocean and how it impacts our lives, Liam Mitchell, Director of the Galway Education Support Centre said: “We’re really looking forward to offering this new course, packed with innovative ideas and activities for teachers to use in the classroom to encourage their students to become 'healthy ocean' ambassadors.”

“The course provides great ideas for teachers to integrate marine themes across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12, 13 & 14 by highlighting stories of the world's most fascinating marine creatures. The Explorers team will present the adventures and stories of humpback whales, polar bears, penguins, and sea turtles (to name a few) to highlight world challenges such as climate change, the decline of marine biodiversity, and plastic and pollution in the ocean,” Liam added.

Cushla-Dromgool-Regan, Explorers Education & Communications Manager said: “This is a fun course filled with Explorers super-hero STEM activities, arts & crafts and well-being exercises that will give teachers an opportunity to guide children in developing their understanding of the unique challenges in the world – in a proactive way.”

“The activities, including making tote bags from recycled t-shirts and designing tidal barriers, will offer inspiring ways to teach children about empathy and compassion. The course aims to encourage teachers and children to start fun initiatives that can create positive blue changes, big and small. These activities will also include planning easy steps to take action together in the classroom and school in going blue, creating a healthy ocean and becoming ocean champions,” explained Cushla.
