BIM visit Lehanagh Pool Aquaculture Research Site

Jim O’Toole, CEO of Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and Paul Connolly, CEO Marine Institute recently visited the Marine Institute’s Aquaculture Research Site at Lehanagh Pool in Co Galway.

8th September 2022: Jim O’Toole, CEO of Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and Rory Campbell, BIM Director Seafood Technical Services recently visited the Marine Institute’s Aquaculture Research Site at Lehanagh Pool in Co Galway.

Work is underway linking the growth of seaweeds, scallops, oysters, urchins, sea cucumber and other species to embrace a more integrated and sustainable food production system within our aquaculture industry.

The site looks at the linked growth of different species serving complementary functions within the marine ecosystem, which is also known as Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA).

Data sets are monitored from sensors around the site to give a real time picture of what is happening. This is coupled with ocean modelling of the bay to give a picture of water circulation through the system.

There are ongoing discussions between BIM and the Marine Institute on how we might implement components of the new Aquaculture Strategy at the Lehanagh Pool Research Site.
