The Marine Institute recently hosted a one-day workshop on March 27th bringing together Irish researchers broadly working in the field of chemical oceanography/biogeochemical cycling in coastal, shelf and ocean environments.

Chemical oceanography is interdisciplinary and brings together sciences in understanding of ocean circulation, climate, ocean life, as well as the exchange of material with the atmosphere.

The aim of the workshop was to facilitate knowledge exchange, identify potential synergies and research links, and increase awareness of the national expertise, data and other resources.

"The workshop was very successful and included a day of presentations highlighting the importance of agencies and universities coming together to share the work we are doing, which will help to maximise the national research potential," explained Triona Mc Grath, working with Earth and Ocean Sciences, NUI Galway and the Marine Environment and Food Safety Services, Marine Institute.

Participants included researchers from NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin, the Marine Institute, the Environmental Protection Agency, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Agri-Food and Biogeosciences Institute NI, Waterford Institute of Technology and Marine Scotland.
